The Election Is Over

Congratulations to our prospective new councillors on the Bay Of Plenty Regional Council. Final results are expected this Friday 17th of October, and the five successful councillors will be deemed elected. There has been one upset so far but we are not expecting any further changes. Andrew von Dadelszon was five votes ahead of Kat MacMillan on the progress results, but Kat has come through on the preliminary results, and is now ahead of Andrew. So well done to our prospective Tauranga ward councillors; Stuart Crosby, Tim Maltby, Glenn Dougal, Kate Graeme and Kat MacMillan (unless there is another change).

For information; the Saturday progress results counted all ballots received up to and including Friday 10th of October. Ballots closed at 12.00 noon on Saturday 11th of October. The Monday preliminary results included the Saturday ballots, but did not include special votes. The final results are due on Friday and will include the special votes. The new councillors start their term when the final results are announced on Friday, but can not act in their official capacity until they are sworn in at the inaugural meeting on Thursday 30th of October.

Whakatane District Council had a similar upset for the Mayoral vote. The current Mayor Victa Luca was ahead on the progress results, but has been overtaken by Nandor Tanczos on the preliminary results. We are not expecting another change, so well done Nandor.

Thank you to all the unsuccessful candidates who stood in the election. That is an important contribution to our democracy, and better luck next time. The voter turnout was disappointing, only 25% for Regional Council Tauranga Ward.

MRRR AGM. Mount Parking and Rowesdale Subdivision

Mount Maunganui Ratepayers, Residents and Retailers (MRRR) have their AGM and public meeting at 7.00 pm Thursday 30th of October, Mount Harbour Chapel, Corner of Puriri and Tawa Streets, Mount Maunganui (behind the Mount Library).

For the AGM we will be voting to elect the society officers for the next year, and to approve the new constitution. Download the MRRR Constitution. We are looking for new members for the committee. Any one who is interested please download the Nomination Form, or you can nominate on the night.

Shawn Geard from Tauranga City Council will be giving a short overview of what is happening with Mount Parking. Kerrie Maddox and Barbara Turley will be talking about Rowesdale Subdivision, another legacy from the days of the commissars.

The Tauranga City Mayor and Councillors have been invited along. They are also hosting an event in the historic village from 5.30-7.00 pm, so if they come they will be late (see below). Shawn, Kerrie, Barbara and the councillors who attend will be answering questions at the end.

Let's talk Tauranga: A community event with the Mayor and Councillors

The Tauranga City Mayor and Councillors are inviting you to a community event at 5.30-7.00pm Thursday 30th October, Balcony Room, The Historic Village, 159 17th Avenue West. It clashes with the MRRR event. Perhaps you can go to both?.

Rates Comparison

Check Tauranga City Council rates on the Taxpayers Union Rates Comparison. Tauranga rates have increased 9.90% this year, with a 35.98% increase over the last three years. The spending on our Great Civic Center Black Hole (the GCCBH), means that we have large rates increases ahead of us for years to come. There are different views on whether the GCCBH is wanted by ratepayers, but whether we like it or not, the GCCBH is here to stay thanks to the current council, and the rates increases are locked in. Even if we vote the current council out next time around, the rates increases are locked in.
